Goodbye La Vieille

This December 11, 2016, we said goodbye to La Vieille, a gentle old soul who lived at JGI’s Tchimpounga sanctuary for 24 years.

When it comes to chimpanzees, the fight to be on top is key for access to mates and food. Ferdinand, 24, who has been alpha male of his group at Gombe for eight years was recently challenged by none other than his Nephew, Fudge, 19. Fudge came out the victor and is now the new alpha male at Gombe.

Be sure to tune in to ‘Wild Animal Reunions’ on ITV this Wednesday (27 July) at 8.00pm, you will see resident vet, Rebeca Atencia, reunited with female chimpanzee Kudia. Rebeca was Kudia’s surrogate Mother for more than five years before Kudia was relocated to one of the beautiful islands on the Kouilou river, that are now part of the Tchimpounga Reserve. The question is will Kudia recognise Rebeca.
